How to Care for Your Salt and Pepper Wig to Keep It Looking Fresh

A salt and pepper human hair wig is more than just a style choice — it’s a statement of elegance, confidence, and grace. Because Luvwin's wig is made from 100% real hair, it needs gentle and consistent care to keep it soft, shiny, and natural-looking.

Here’s a simple guide to help you care for your wig at home, so it always looks fresh and lasts longer.

1. Wash Gently, Just Like Your Own Hair 💧

Human hair wigs don’t need daily washing. In fact, over-washing can strip away moisture.

Wash your wig after 6–8 wears, or when you feel it's getting a little oily or heavy with styling products.

Washing tips:

  • Use cool or lukewarm water (never hot).
  • Choose a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo designed for human hair or wigs.
  • Detangle before washing using a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.
  • Gently swish the wig in water, rinse well, and avoid rubbing or twisting.
  • Apply a rich conditioner from mid-length to ends, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Let it air dry on a wig stand — never wring or hang it while wet.

2. Moisturize, Tone, and Deep Condition Regularly 🧴

Since your wig doesn’t produce natural oils like a scalp does, it needs help staying hydrated and bright.

  • Use a leave-in conditioner spray to maintain softness.
  • For added shine, apply a small amount of argan oil or coconut oil to the ends — never near the lace.
  • Once or twice a month, treat your wig to a deep conditioning mask. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse and air dry.

👉 Important: Over time, gray or silver tones can turn yellow — especially if exposed to heat, sun, or wrong products.

To fix this, use a purple shampoo once every few washes. It helps neutralize yellow tones and keeps your salt and pepper color looking clean and vibrant. Be sure to follow with a moisturizing conditioner.

3. Style with Care — Heat is Okay (But Protect It!) 🔥

One of the benefits of a human hair wig is that you can style it with heat tools. But just like your natural hair, heat can cause damage if you're not careful.

  • Always apply a heat protectant spray before blow-drying, straightening, or curling.
  • Use low to medium heat settings.
  • Avoid styling the same section of wig over and over.
  • When possible, let your wig air dry and embrace its natural texture — it’ll last longer this way.

When you're not wearing your wig, store it on a wig stand to help maintain its shape.

  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the beautiful salt and pepper color.
  • If you're traveling, use a silk or satin bag to protect the wigs from friction and damage.

Caring for your human hair wig doesn’t have to be difficult — just treat it like your own hair, with a little extra love. With the right care, your salt and pepper wig can stay beautiful for months (or even years), helping you feel confident every single day.

I’d like to know if you have any ALL salt afro wigs? NOT salt and pepper! My 85 yr old mom is going through Chemo and lost ALL of her snow white grey hair. She doesn’t like salt and pepper because it doesn’t reflect her natural color, however she’d like to try a human hair wig with less padding in the crown of the head because it’s to bulky and doesn’t look natural. If possible ANY suggestions? Please and thank you 🙏🏽
